{"id":335,"date":"2018-08-31T10:43:45","date_gmt":"2018-08-31T10:43:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chooselife.co.uk\/?p=335"},"modified":"2018-09-14T13:21:01","modified_gmt":"2018-09-14T13:21:01","slug":"seaweed-reduces-methane-production-in-holstein-cows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chooselife.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/08\/31\/seaweed-reduces-methane-production-in-holstein-cows\/","title":{"rendered":"Seaweed reduces Methane production in Holstein Cows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018-08-seaweed-dairy-cows-emissions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018-08-seaweed-dairy-cows-emissions.html<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"first-block\">\n<p>University of California researchers are feeding seaweed to dairy cows in an attempt to make cattle more climate-friendly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section class=\"article-banner first-banner\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1449240174198-2\"><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>UC Davis is studying whether adding small amounts of seaweed to\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/cattle+feed\/\" rel=\"tag\">cattle feed<\/a>\u00a0can help reduce their emissions of methane, a\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/potent+greenhouse+gas\/\" rel=\"tag\">potent greenhouse gas<\/a>\u00a0that&#8217;s released when cattle burp, pass gas or make manure.<\/p>\n<p>In a study this past spring, researchers found\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/methane+emissions\/\" rel=\"tag\">methane emissions<\/a>\u00a0were reduced by more than 30 percent in a dozen Holstein cows that ate the ocean algae, which was mixed into their feed and sweetened with molasses to disguise the\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/salty+taste\/\" rel=\"tag\">salty taste<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was extremely surprised when I saw the results,&#8221; said Ermias Kebreab, the UC Davis animal scientist who led the study. &#8220;I wasn&#8217;t expecting it to be that dramatic with a small amount of seaweed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kebreab says his team plans to conduct a six-month study of a seaweed-infused diet in beef cattle starting in October.<\/p>\n<p>More studies will be needed to determine its safety and efficacy, and seaweed growers would have to ramp up production to make it an economical option for farmers.<\/p>\n<p>Dairy farms and other livestock operations are major sources of methane, a heat-trapping gas many times more potent than carbon dioxide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ChooseLife :\u00a0<\/strong>Seaweed and Molasses, is there no end to the magnificence of this combination?\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sicknesshope.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/sicknesshope.com\/<\/a> Moreless knew.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018-08-seaweed-dairy-cows-emissions.html University of California researchers are feeding seaweed to dairy cows in an attempt to make cattle more climate-friendly.
